‘ART and PLAY’ brings bold creativity and joyful interaction to the heart of Westgate Oxford

Stepping into Leiden Square this summer, you’ll find something new — something bold, bright, and unmistakably different. It’s called ART and PLAY, and it’s not just an installation — it’s a statement.

From the moment you arrive, it’s clear that ART and PLAY isn’t there to quietly blend into the background. Designed to interrupt the everyday, this interactive 3D installation transforms the familiar surroundings of Westgate Oxford into a playground of colour, curiosity, and connection.

Created in collaboration with CRIA Projects and brought vividly to life by renowned Irish artist Maser, ART and PLAY draws its energy from bold blocks of colour, abstract shapes, and architectural forms that are as functional as they are artistic.

Maser’s signature visual language — striking geometric patterns and dynamic colour palettes — has been applied to every surface, turning the space into a walk-through canvas that invites you to look closer, touch, climb, or simply pause.

This isn’t art you tiptoe around or observe from behind a rope. It’s art that welcomes interaction.

Clusters of soft, colourful cubes invite you to take a seat. Smooth slides and tactile surfaces call to children — and the young at heart. Archways, cylinders, and cleverly placed benches encourage spontaneous gathering, whether you’re meeting a friend or taking a break between shops. It’s public space reimagined as something joyful, accessible, and above all — alive.

At the heart of the installation sits its centrepiece: a large-scale structure that feels almost sculptural in form but functions as a space to reflect and connect. It’s playful without being childish, artistic without being austere — a fine balance that few installations strike so well.

Inclusivity has been carefully woven into the experience too. With wheelchair-accessible and buggy-friendly seating, the space makes good on its promise to welcome everyone — from solo visitors taking a break to families with toddlers, teens, or grandparents in tow.

“ART and PLAY is a unique space that brings art, play, and community connection to the heart of the city,” says Brendan Hattam, Centre Director at Westgate Oxford. “We wanted to create something inviting and fun, where everyone — locals, students, tourists — can relax, connect, and make new memories.”
