The Oxfordshire people recognised in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2025

About the King’s Birthday Honours List

Honouring Oxfordshire: Celebrating our local heroes in the King’s Birthday Honours List 2025

The King’s Birthday Honours List is a long-standing tradition that recognises individuals who have made outstanding contributions to public life. From scientific discovery to civic leadership, this year’s list once again highlights the breadth of talent and commitment across the UK – and Oxfordshire is proudly represented.

Leading this year’s local honourees is Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, appointed a Companion of Honour (CH) for services to Astronomy and Physics and to Diversity. An eminent astrophysicist, she is Professor Emeritus of Physics at the University of Oxford Department of Physics, Professorial Fellow in Physics at Mansfield College, and a Fellow of the Royal Society. Renowned for her discovery of pulsars as a radio astronomy graduate student at Cambridge, Professor Bell Burnell has since contributed to gamma ray, X-ray, infrared and millimetre wavelength astronomy. Equally recognised for her lifelong advocacy for diversity and inclusion in science, she continues to inspire new generations of researchers and changemakers.

Also honoured is Professor Ursula Hilda Martin, appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to science and education. A distinguished mathematician and computer scientist, she is Emeritus Professor of Mathematics and a Fellow of Wadham College. Her interdisciplinary work has had a profound academic, practical and cultural impact.

Business and innovation are also celebrated, with The Hon. Joseph Cyril Edward Bamford of Chipping Norton, recognised for his work at HydraB Power Group with a focus on innovating and developing the clean hydrogen economy. Meanwhile, David Philip Howden, Founder and CEO of Howden Group, is honoured for his services to the insurance industry.

Further recipients include:

  • Professor Lucie Dale Cluver, Professor of Child and Family Social Work at the University of Oxford, recognised for services to Children’s Wellbeing and to Global Public Health
  • Gareth Rhys Stapleton, Founder and Partner at RiSE International, honoured for services to Architecture and to Project and Construction Management
  • Estelle Bailey, Chief Executive of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxford Wildlife Trust (BBOWT), recognised for services to Nature’s Recovery

These honours serve as a powerful reminder of the exceptional work being done right here in Oxfordshire—work that continues to shape the future and inspire generations to come.
