Exhibitions and art fairs in Oxfordshire
From the Oxford Christmas Arts Market, which promises to be a veritable jamboree of potential gifts, to the unique exhibition of rarely seen visceral paintings by a self-proclaimed painter working as a sculptor, here’s our pick of the exhibitions, art fairs, markets and such to visit in Oxford and across Oxfordshire this December.
Oxford Christmas Arts Market
The 2021 Oxford Christmas Arts Market takes place in the beautiful and iconic setting of Broad Street Oxford, in the shadow of many of the City’s famous landmarks, and will feature many local artists, designer-makers and selected guests. It promises to be a veritable jamboree of potential gifts – for friends and family, and even yourself too.
TOKYO at the Ashmolean
This major exhibition explores Japan’s capital city through the varied and vibrant arts it has generated over 400 years, from its beginnings as the headquarters of the Tokugawa shoguns in the early 1600s to the sprawling modern metropolis and dynamic centre of art, photography and design it is today.
Deck the Walls at Sarah Wiseman Gallery, Oxford
In this annual Christmas exhibition, Sarah Wiseman Gallery hand-picks the best of British contemporary artists and makers to see all in one place. This Christmas show is the place to find something beautiful for the art lover in your life.
Dante at the Ashmolean
Personality cults; style icons; reality TV: these staples of our modern world have an origin. On the 700th anniversary of the death of Dante (1265–1321), this free exhibition explores the great poet and philosopher's influence on art and culture over the centuries.
Anish Kapoor at Modern Art Oxford
This unique exhibition of paintings by Anish Kapoor will explore the paintings that have been an integral part of his studio practice for over 40 years. The materiality of Kapoor’s substantial body of new works pushes the boundaries between sculpture and painting into visceral new ground.
In Praise of Hands at the Ashmolean, Oxford
The human hand, one of the most challenging subjects for any artist, is a theme that distinguished printmaker Naoko Matsubara (b. 1937) has explored since the birth of her son in 1973. This exhibition explores Naoko’s work in a series of woodcuts exploring the human hand — engaged in sport, dance, music, prayer or a variety of creative acts.
