Visiting a garden centre is a bit of a guilty pleasure for most of us, and these days it’s become less about just going to shop for plants and gardening items. It’s more about the all-around experience of browsing the centre for ideas, grabbing a coffee in the cafe, and even visiting the play area with the kids.

Yarnton Home & Garden

Pop in for a bite to eat - they’re open for wholesome home-cooked breakfast, lunch and afternoon tea. And stock up on essentials at the small but perfectly formed Food Hall that is full to the brim with your most-wanted store cupboard food, drinks and treats.

Yarnton Home & Garden (previously known as Yarnton Nurseries) is now considered a destination rather than just a garden centre and has undergone considerable development work under its new owners. It’s well worth a visit.

Nicholson Nurseries

Nicholson has a 23-acre site in North Aston, Bicester, that offers more than your average garden centre. The site contains a large selection of trees, including bare root, root ball, container-grown, standard and specimen trees in ornamental and native species.

Alongside the trees, the range of plants extends to all the usual suspects – shrubs, a small herbaceous collection, climbers, fruit and bigger screening plants. As soon as you get to your destination, you can tell that the company takes plants seriously.

Also, on the site, you’ll find the Rosara range of furniture celebrates all aspects of a garden using furniture, lighting and accessories - not in a one-stop-shop kind of way but as part of a guided catalogue.

Do stop by the Yurt for a tasteful selection of organic, fresh, and local food in the form of breakfasts, sharing platters and light lunches designed to leave you feeling energised for the rest of the day.

Toad Hall Garden Centre

In 1952 Toby and Skit Stubbs embarked on a new adventure and followed their passion by purchasing a derelict and overgrown ‘walled garden’ outside Henley-On-Thames, originally growing and selling vegetables before specialising in growing plants in 1960.

The recently renovated Willows Coffee Shop offers a reason to linger a little longer at Toad Hall. Located within the heart of the garden centre amidst the stunning houseplants, the coffee shop provides a beautiful and relaxing atmosphere.

Root One Garden Centre

Located on the main road running from Wallingford to Didcot, just outside the village of Brightwell-cum-Sotwell is Root One Garden Centre & Cafe, a privately-owned independent garden centre.

Expect to find an extensive range of plants, including perennials and grasses, roses, trees, alpines and succulents, climbers, shrubs, edibles, seeds and bulbs, and seasonal bedding.

There’s also a garden care department, a range of quality garden tools and equipment, and an eclectic collection of gifts. Whether you are seriously green-fingered or an absolute novice, they’d be delighted to help.

The top-notch cafe serves hot and cold drinks, sweet and savoury snacks, sandwiches and hot meals with plenty of space for lunch and tea parties.
