Owner insight

Rowstock Manor is situated in a glorious semirural location that is just six miles from the historic market town of Abingdon. It is an exceptional five-bedroom family home, with approximately one acre of land and spectacular countryside views.

"As well as the huge amount of potential we could see in the house itself, I’d say that it was the setting that initially attracted us to the property," says Karen, the owner. "It sits totally alone, surrounded by nothing but rolling farmland, and so the views, particularly from the back garden, are absolutely breathtaking.

"On a clear day, we can see right the way across to Whittenham Clumps. It is like living in our own slice of paradise. However, we have never felt isolated. We have easy access to places such as Oxford, Newbury and Reading, and from nearby Didcot Parkway, we can hop on a train and arrive at Paddington Station in just forty minutes.

"I think it is fair to say that that the house itself was in a bit of a sorry state when we bought it. It had been rented out for around five years, and it was all a bit tatty and unloved. However, it is a house with great bones and, at almost five and a half thousand square feet, masses of space. We knew that with a bit of hard work and imagination, we could transform it into something really quite special, and that is exactly what we have done.

"We have rearranged the layout to create a much better flow from room to room. Walls were taken down to enhance the feeling of space, a beautiful new kitchen was installed, and the bathrooms were modernised. The house has been very stylishly redecorated from top to bottom. We wanted every inch to have that wow factor, and that is definitely something that has been achieved. It is a house that doesn’t disappoint.

"The house is gorgeous to look at from the outside. I have always said that it has the look of a French Chateaux, so when we began redesigning the outside space, that is where we took inspiration," continues Karen. "To the front, we have a large gravel drive, pretty lawns on either side of the path leading to the front door, and we have added topiary for interest and a touch of elegance.

"In the back garden, which is a vast space overlooking the fields beyond, we have a huge patio terrace edged with box hedging and more topiary. And in the middle third of the lawn, we have created a beautiful parterre. The garden as a whole is now a really attractive space, but it is also very family-friendly and amazing for summer entertaining.

"The kitchen is definitely my favourite room because it is the real heart of the home, and the overall design is just stunning. However, if you were to ask my husband, I am sure he would pick the bar-cum-games room. It has our pool table in the middle and a drinks area in one corner. We have decorated it using sumptuous wallpaper and furnishings, so it looks like an elegant gentleman’s club.

"What makes the location so outstanding is the fact that when we are at home staring out at nothing but farmland, we almost feel as if we are living in the middle of nowhere. However, we have an array of lovely towns and villages close by, and the local transport links are excellent, so it is relatively easy to get just about anywhere.

"The master suite is another standout feature of the house. We knocked two rooms into one and created one vast open-plan bedroom, dressing area and bathroom. It has the look and feel of a luxury hotel suite, and for my husband and I, it is a gorgeous retreat at the end of a hard day.

"The house is stunning and totally unique in every way, but it is the space and this gorgeous setting that I think I will miss the most,” says Karen. “We can come home, shut the gate and be cocooned in our own little world, but at the same time have the peace of mind of knowing everything we need is within easy reach."
