Our top 3 elegant bathroom trends for 2021 -Spa bathroom

Designing a functional living space that not only works but also appeals to our keen sense of self-expression can be a challenge. Here are our top 3 bathroom trends to keep an eye on in 2021.

The kitchen and the bathroom are the two most functional rooms in a home and two that all buyers look out for when viewing a new property. They are also the two rooms most likely to be replaced within the first year of moving into a new home. When you do something in a room, it needs to work for you and your living patterns. In the bathroom, do you lean towards a shower or a bath? Do you while away the hours relaxing and listening to music, or are you in and out as quickly as possible? Those answers should determine what type of bathroom you seek to install.

The bathroom is often associated with luxury and relaxation, somewhere to unwind at the end of the day. That dictates a need for it to feel welcoming, elegant and peaceful, and each year different trends look to play into those themes. It's worth mentioning that this is an area that UK residents spend, on average, £3,340 – a significant sum of money which shows the level of care and attention people put into personalising their bathroom.

So, as we head into spring 2021, what can we expect from the exciting and innovative bathroom market, and what will the people of Oxford be spending their money on?

Spa bathroom

Oxford residents have been told to remain in their homes since early January, a situation we have seen in place now in different forms since March 2020. That is fuelling a desire for a more relaxing, luxurious home, with a spa bathroom becoming a big trend for the year ahead.

But while a spa bathroom might mean plenty of scented candles and other accessories, it should invoke luxury in terms of fixtures and fittings. “More of our customers want to create an oasis of wellbeing at the heart of their home, somewhere that they can enjoy as a private retreat to de-stress and unwind,” explains Yousef Mansuri, head of design at bathroom designer C.P. Hart.

Freestanding baths

Another big trend for the year ahead is the freestanding bath, a real eyebrow-raising choice in a new bathroom. They can be striking feature pieces, especially in natural materials such as copper. “Freestanding baths come in a variety of shapes and sizes so can easily be added into smaller spaces or even en-suites”, according to George Holland of furniture supplier Victorian Plumbing.

A freestanding bath may need alterations to the plumbing that a simple refit does not, with changes to the pipework and possibly tap placement, too. And any such changes may be worth protecting after installation - something that should be a consideration as part of any refit. For example, the insurance cover on HomeServe details that plumbing protection ensures peace of mind should your pipes, sinks, toilets and drains develop a fault. Protecting your renovation is a core aspect of the job that many forget to consider at their peril.

Smart technology

Another top bathroom trends for 2021 is the use of smart technology. 2021 will be the year of the smart home, and the bathroom is a great place to bring new and exciting ideas into play. A smart bathroom can help you save energy as well as make your relaxation time even more luxurious. How about a mirror that demists itself when you are in the bathroom? Or LED temperature displays that let you know how warm the room is or the water in your freshly run bath?

Those are very functional choices, but as George Holland added, you can bring plenty of leisurely elements into the build too. “The ability to stream audio from your phone makes showers and long soaks more enjoyable, while the powerful LED lighting works well in both light and dark bathrooms.” Do remember though, if you are planning to use smart technology, powered by electricity, in your new bathroom, then do appoint a qualified installer rather than trying to do it yourself. The combination of water and electrical current is not a good one, so using an approved tradesperson is not just recommended for safety, it is essential.
